On 5th November 1688, William of Orange landed in Torbay. He had been invited by the parliamentary opposition to take the throne from his wife's father, James II. He brought 463 ships with him carrying 14,000 men, and was unopposed by the Royal Navy. His march on London became known as the "Glorious Revolution" and in February 1689 King William III and Queen Mary II were crowned.
