Shchedryk (Carol of the bells) comes from an ancient Ukrainian New Year ritual song — a shchedrivka. In the early 20th century, Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych took this melody and kept refining it for almost his entire life. The final version appeared in 1919. The song later became known worldwide thanks to the tours of the Ukrainian Republican Capella, conducted by Oleksandr Koshyts.
