The Atlantic basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America, as the Gulf of Mexico is now known in the U.S. per an order from President Trump. NOAA and the National Hurricane Center are now using Gulf of America on its maps and in its advisories.
Hurricane Erin's impacts are already underway across the Southeast, bringing dangerous surf and strong rip currents along Florida's East Coast beaches. The Category 2 storm has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph.
Conditions along the Florida coast are expected to deteriorate Wednesday as Hurricane Erin moves north-northwest off Florida.
In April, the WMO Hurricane Committee retired the names Beryl, Helene, and Milton from being used for hurricanes in the Atlantic because of the death and destruction those storms caused in 2024. Brianna, Holly, and Miguel will replace them. The next potential hurricane name for this year is Fernand.
