Beth learns to play chess from a janitor named Mr. Shaibol, who works at the orphanage where she spends her childhood. After she is adopted, Beth begins to partake in competitive chess competitions. Eventually, she defeats Grandmaster Vasily Borgov in Russia.

Young chess players arrived at Henderson Memorial Public Library Saturday to hone their skills against other like-minded individuals from County. The County Junior Chess Tournament has taken place at the library for nine years and will be followed Saturday with a tournament for high school students and adults.
