Another series of atmospheric river-enhanced storms will soak California just days after a destructive Christmas-week storm.

A winter storm is hitting New York City and other parts of the Northeast, but an atmospheric river that dumped rain on California most of the week was easing.

Forecasters measured 4.52 inches of rain at the Santa Barbara Airport on Christmas, beating the previous record of 2.17 inches set in 1955.

Rain poured down on the iconic Rose Parade on Thursday for the first time in 20 years, as flood warnings and evacuation orders in Southern California joined snow squalls and frigid temperatures in the country's midsection to mark the first day of 2026.

Some rain will spread into San Francisco, Sacramento and much of the balance of Central and Northern California from the storm spanning later Wednesday to Friday. Rain showers will also spill into the deserts in Las Vegas and Reno, Nev., as well as Phoenix and Yuma, Ariz.

The NWS warns Arctic cold will bring heavy lake-effect snow to the Great Lakes, snow squalls across the Midwest and Northeast, and possible flash flooding in Los Angeles and southern California as the New Year approaches.
